The Unknown Territory series started on a long rambling trip to Europe. I went to the Biennale in Venice, the large contemporary art show with works from all over the world. After viewing inspiring art in multiple buildings, I paused outside to take a break and pulled out my camera. My photos were all abstract images; they were taken at close range, yet when I got back to the studio and viewed them, I realized they echoed a feeling of traveling through unknown landscapes. I didnt have a permanent studio at the time I was working in borrowed studios in various cities. The series of paintings that emerged is about finding home wherever we are, mapping our territory and creating pathways through the unfamiliar.
