Encaustic painting is painting with hot beeswax mixed with colored pigments.
Encaustic is an ancient medium and was used as far back as 200 A.D. for Fayum funeral portraits used to aid the journey on to the afterlife. In contemporary art, encaustic was famously used by Jasper Johns in the 1950s, as well as Diego Rivera in the 1920s. Currently encaustic is being discovered by new generations of artists and art collectors who love its beauty and creative possibilities.
